Chapter Five
Exploring the Ten Domains
1. Spirituality
Let’s explore each of the Ten Domains of Effective Goal Setting.
1. Spirituality
Whether religious, spiritual, or neither, the first domain, Spirituality, provides an opportunity to examine what matters to you in your convictions or beliefs.
What is your purpose? What shapes your faith? Who is your higher power, and what role does that entity play in your life? What values guide you?
Spirituality is arguably the most personal domain and therefore tops the list.
For some people, spirituality influences several areas of their lives. For others, it is not part of their goal setting. This personal choice serves as a reminder that the Ten Domains is a flexible goal-setting template. It is more of a framework than a strict guideline.
In the realm of spirituality, short-term goals, such as planning to attend church, temple, or mosque more often, might include ambitions for the upcoming year. Long-term goals, such as three-, five-, or ten-year plans, could involve bucket list items like reading the Bible or Quran cover to cover, or remembering to pray, or maintaining faith during life’s more challenging moments.
Nevertheless, consider both short-term and long-term intentions that align with your spirituality, religious beliefs, or personal values as you journey through life on Earth.
